A grant of £1,000 from the Sport Relief Community Cash Programme enabled Southampton based Dwarf Sports Association UK (South Central Region) to hire a swimming pool with a fully qualified instructor for its swimming training and teaching sessions. This allowed members to participate in various swimming events while meeting other people with similar conditions, providing them with the confidence and self-esteem to get involved in sport whilst building strong friendships.
“The swimming group helps young people who may otherwise avoid the swimming pool because they look ‘different’, improving their fitness and wellbeing. It contributes to raising expectations in a world where difference seems to matter. We use sport as a tool to break down barriers for people with dwarfism”.
